Procedure Corrects Defect Without Open Heart Surgery Performed by Marc Mayhew, MD, FACC, FSCAI
Dr. Marc Mayhew, Interventional Cardiologist with Cardiovascular Associates, PC, performed a state-of-the-art procedure to close a hole between the two heart chambers of a 34-year old woman without having open heart surgery. The procedure was a first for the Tri-Cities performed December 16, 2008. Dr. Mayhew implanted a small mesh disc filled with polyester fabric called an Amplatzer septal occluder which is inserted through a catheter similar to the kind used during a cardiac catheterization. The disc is tailored to the specific hole, based on its size, shape, and position as determined by an ultrasound. The patient had a genetic anomaly, a hole in the wall between the two heart chambers.
